Former Arunachal CM Kalikho Pul's journey from carpenter to statesman

Kalikho Pul, former chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh, passed away on August 9, 2016. His life story is one of remarkable ascent from humble beginnings to the highest office in the state.

Born in 1969 in the remote Anjaw district bordering China, Pul began his working life as a carpenter. He later became a watchman at a school before entering politics. His political career spanned over two decades, during which he served as the state's finance minister for multiple terms under various chief ministers.

Pul's tenure as chief minister was brief but historic. He assumed office on February 19, 2016, amid political turmoil. However, his government was removed by a Supreme Court order after just six months, making him the shortest-serving chief minister in Arunachal Pradesh's history.

The political saga continued as Nabam Tuki was reinstated, only to be replaced by Pema Khandu as the 10th chief minister of the state. Pul, who had been with the Congress party until December 2015, had formed a government with BJP support in February 2016.

Pul's political journey began in 1995 when he was elected as an MLA from Hayuliang constituency. He went on to win the seat for five consecutive terms. Throughout his career, he held various ministerial portfolios including finance, power, and land management.

Between 2011 and 2014, he was also made adviser to the CM, then again made a minister in 2014.
He was also the executive member of the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee for 13 years and a Pradesh Election Committee Member for 7 years.

Known for his interest in social and community service, Pul's rise from a carpenter to the state's top office is an example to his political acumen and dedication to public service. His story remains a significant chapter in Arunachal Pradesh's political history.
