Guwahati, June 20, 2019:

The 50th death anniversary of 'Kola Guru' Bishnu Prasad Rabha was held today across Assam. The much-revered "master of the arts" was born born in Dacca, Bengal Presidency, British India on 31 January 1909. He breathed his last on 20 June, 1969.

People across the state of Assam, including Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, paid their respects to the cultural doyen. In Assam's Tezpur, a special ceremony was organized the Asom Sahitya Sabha literary society to pay tribute to the legend.

His father Sardar Bahadur Gopal Chandra Rabha was born to a Bodo family, but since he was raised by Rabha family he accepted the title Rabha.

Bishnu Prasad Rabha was a well known cult figure from Assam, well known for his contributions towards the Assamese culture.

His contributions were in the fields of music, dance, painting, literature as well as political activism. As an advocate of peoples' cultural movement, he drew heavily from different genres of classical and folk cultural traditions.

Considered a doyen of the Culture of Assam, the Assamese people affectionately call him Kola Guru, "the master of the arts".

The level of influence exerted by the Kala Guru can be observed through the fact that most cultural music competitions of Assam feature a segment called Bishnu Rava Sangeet related to his compositions, lyrics and verse.
