'AGP the First Political Party to Approach Supreme Court for NRC: Party President Atul BoraAtul Bora

Guwahati, August 31, 2019:

Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora on Saturday expressed utter dissatisfaction over the publication of the final draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Addressing the media, party president Atul Bora said, “We were the first political party to approach the Supreme Court to appeal for an NRC and have been connected to the process since its very inception. We expected a free and fair NRC. The then-CM Hiteswar Saikia said in the floor of the Assam Vidhan Sabha that over 30 lakh Bangladeshis are present in the state but later changed his statement. Similarly, former Union Home Minister, Indrajit Gupta claimed that 50 lakh Bangladeshis were present in the state.”

Comparing with the earlier data, Bora said that today NRC that exclude only 19 lakh is not acceptable. “52,000 government employees were engaged in the proceedings of the NRC due to which the government sector had to suffer a lot,” he added.

He further assured that the AGP party will provide legal guidance to genuine Indian citizens whose names are excluded from the NRC.
