Assam: 20 dead in Barak valley due to flood induced landslides

The “season of annual” Assam floods has begun over incessant rainfalls with the onset of monsoon. This has already affected major districts of the state triggering flash floods, landslides and erosions among other ecological problems.

In Barak valley, so far 20 deaths have been reported in different parts of the region due to the landslides. Rescue operations are going on and the number of deaths may be increased. Hailakandi Mohanpur area, Chandighat tea estate, Karimganj Rahimpur area are worst affected.

As per reports, incessant rainfall-induced landslides has killed eight people in South Assam's Hailakandi district. In the neighbouring Cachar district, seven people, from one family, died. In Rahimpur village of Karimganj district, another massive landslide killed six people, five of them from a single-family.

Taking stock of the situation, Assam CM Sonowal said, "deeply anguished at the loss of lives due to landslides triggered by incessant rain in Barak valley". He has also directed rescue operations to be carried on the area. "I have directed Cachar, Hailakandi & Karimganj district administrations and SDRF to step up rescue, relief operations and facilitate all possible help needed to those affected".

Assam has been badly affected by the floods. A total of 253 villages have been impacted. So far, a total of 197248 people are affected by data released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on 1st June. Along with that, it has seen an increasing number of corona cases which has exceeded more than 1500 cases. As such, the state now faces a dual challenge of health and the environment.
