A meeting was held among the student representatives of the Women’s University, All Assam Student’s Union and the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Hitendranath Goswami in the Jorhat district yesterday. The meeting held at the Circuit house of the district emanated rays of hope for the students. Goswami stated that a Vice Chancellor and a Registrar for the University will be appointed at the earliest. He pronounced that the position of the University will not be degraded. Assam Women’s University as a position will be maintained.
The students of the University were on an agitation against the vague assurances of the Government. The students reacted strongly against the Education Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma’s verdict to denigrate the only women’s University in the North East to a technical institute which compelled them to forego classes and come out of the precincts of the hollowed institute to protest. Since classes began in 2003, the University has been functioning without a Vice-Chancellor or any permanent teaching stuff. Assam Agriculture University,
Assam Agricultural University V-Chancellor K M Bujar Baruah is functioning as its mentor and all the teachers have been appointed on contract basis. However the students heaved a sigh of relief after the meeting yesterday. They resolved to resume their classes putting an end to the protest.
