Honoring the memory of the valiant Ahom General Lachit Borphukan, who is known for defeating an advancing Mughal force on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra during the 'Battle of Saraighat, people across the state of Assam are celebrating 'Lachit Diwas' today.

Recalling the sacrifice of the Ahom brave and his immense contribution to Assam, the state Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal wrote on Twitter, "The undaunted spirit of Lachit Barphukan is an inspiration for every Assamese. His valour & brilliance in war strategy are etched in golden letters in the nation's history. My tributes to the great Ahom General on his birth anniversary."
Borphukan, who, according to reports, was born on November 24, 1622 in Assam's Garhgaon, was a commander and Borphukan in the Ahom kingdom, located in present-day Assam, India, known for his leadership in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat that thwarted a drawn-out attempt by Mughal forces under the command of Ramsingh I to take back the Ahom kingdom.

Although Lachit died about a year later due to illness, his great leadership and standing as one of the greatest heroes Assam has ever seen, remain etched in the public conscious of Assam. It may be mentioned here that Lachit Divas is celebrated to promote the ideals of Lachit Borphukan and to keep his memory alive.
