Assam: Last Golden Langur Inhabiting Guwahati's Umananda Dies

Guwahati, February 24, 2020:

The last Golden Langur inhabiting in Assam’s Umananda island has died, thereby bringing the already extinct species to zero.

According to reports, Umananda island had been the habitat of most of the Golden Langurs. They had been residing in the smallest island since several years. However, over the past few years, the number had decreased to one and now none.

The reason of the last surviving Golden Langur’s death is yet to be established. Conservationists have cited loneliness and depression as the possible reasons behind the death.

It may be mentioned here that the Golden Langur is a highly endangered species and the primate is striving only in this part of the world as per reports.

The government had earlier initiated several efforts to protect and preserve the 500 Golden Langurs (2019 census) that are left in Assam. Decreasing food reserves and unsafe environment resulting in human-animal conflict has further aided in the declining population of the Golden Langurs.
