Assam: Timber Worth Rs 6 lakh Seized in Kokrajhar amid Lockdown

Kokrajhar, April 10, 2020:

While the country is under strict lockdown to contain the coronavirus spread, a huge stock of timber worth Rs 6 lakh has been seized in the Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD).

On Friday morning, the Forest Department and members from Anti-Corruption & Crime Investigation Front (ACIF) seized around fifteen pairs of bullock carts laden with valuable timber from Chirang Reserve Forest and Kachugaon Reserve Forest in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts.

The Forest Department has been initiating stern measures against the timber mafias and smuggling along the jungles in the region. Personnel have also detected smuggled timber logs at Seleka under Runikhata police stations in Chirang district.

Sal logs were seized in an operation carried out against the timber mafias in the reserve forest areas. According to a senior forest official, the market value of the seized ones is approximately 6 lakh rupees.

It may be mentioned here that the timber stock has been seized at a time when there is a strict lockdown going on amid the coronavirus outbreak in Assam and the country.

Security has been beefed up in all the areas to ensure that the lockdown is followed by all.
