Guwahati, February 17, 2020:

The Assam transport department on Monday started a drive against traffic rule violators in Guwahati. As an initiative to curb violation, the transport personnel took initiatives to stop violations by all the vehicles plying in the city.

Transport department officials said over the years, several rules had been introduced in order to check traffic congestion in the city and identifying it to be majorly caused by the city buses in the city.

The official further added that most buses do not comply with the basic rules and several are found plying without proper documentation. People on two-wheelers without helmets are being fined at least Rs 1000.

It may be mentioned here that the department has made it mandatory for buses to halt at bus stops for not more than the allotted time. The buses will have to have their doors shut while they are moving and the doors will be allowed to be open only while being stationed at a bus stop. Overloading of passengers is also being monitored and action will be taken against violators.

The police have also launched WhatsApp numbers so that citizens can file complaints about traffic violators.

Transport Commissioner, Adil Khan said that the drive has been initiated for the citizens and for their safety but it is seen that several vehicles and drivers are not complying with the basic rules.

DTO Bapan Kalita said, "Whatever rules are being implemented, are based on the orders by the Gauhati High Court. A city bus as per discussions with the bus associations and transport department has been fixed at 1 minute halt at one stoppage." He added that if anyone is unhappy with the new rules set under the guidance of the High Court, they can take the matter to the court as everyone has a right to protest.

Kalita further added that since the fines are being issued online, now there are no scope for corruption as well.
