DHUBRI: The Goalpara Postal Division Dhubri has geographical lying symbolic with Assam by organising a special cover on "Joha Rice of Assam".

It may be noted that the Joha rice produced in Assam is much softer and flavoured than non-aromatic rice due to its special aromatic properties and size.

Devraj Shetty Dev, Superintendent, Goalpara Postal Division, gave the welcome address at the beginning of the meeting.

Jayachandra Nayak, Deputy Inspector General, BSF, Panbari, Dhruba Chakraborty, Principal BN College, Dhubri and Rudal Dubey, Principal Kendriya Vidyalaya, Panbari were the chief guest of the program.

Dhruba Chakraborty delivered an informative speech on Joha Rice.

Rudal Dubey Badiya also spoke and congratulated the Goalpara Postal Department on the national success achieved in the Sukanya Sariddhi Scheme.

At the end of the meeting, Jayachandra Nayak said as a farmer's son he was very exhilarated that the indigenous medium and short-grain type scented rice cultivars of Assam are locally known by the collective name “Joha”.

Rice cultivars from Assam are witnessing demand in the international market, particularly Middle East and Europe (Anon, 2007) which is a new phenomenon keeping in view hundreds of postal officers, staff and local people attended the inaugural ceremony.

Further, any government or NON-Governmental organization through the philately service of the Indian Postal Department at the cost of a fixed fees, special cover can be released on top of an event. One can get details only by contacting the nearest post office.
