Titabor, a small town in Jorhat district of Assam has become the state’s first ‘zero waste town’ by revolutionizing management of solid waste.
The upper Assam town, reportedly succeeded in processing up to 80 percent of waste and according to the general standard, any town achieving upto 80 percent of waste can claim to be ‘zero waste town’.

According to reports, Titabor town has come up with material recovery facility where all organic waste is managed through aerobic composting. The move has aided in reducing foul smell and greenhouse gas emission from the dumpsite.
Apart from achieving the zero waste town, the Jorhat town has also set up the state’s first bio-mining project to completely recover the dumpsite and work towards 100 percent waste processing.
Director of CARE North East Foundation, Dr Sanjay Gupta informed that things started to change in Titabor from 2016 when the transport of solid waste from the town to its dump site was protested from neighboring areas and accordingly the material recovery facility was set up.
