New Delhi, March 13, 2019:

The Election Commission (EC) of India as its action against violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) on social media, on Tuesday, asked Facebook to remove two political posters with Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman’s photograph, shared by Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Delhi MLA Om Prakash Sharma.

The action was taken by the EC after receiving a complaint through the cVIGIL app from Shivnath Thukral, Director, Public Policy for India and South Asia.

The political posters contain the photographs of Wing Commander Varthaman, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah, and MLA Om Prakash Sharma which were shared on Facebook by the MLA.

Earlier, the EC had asked all recognized political parties to stop making references to the armed forces in their political campaigns. The MCC has been initiated from Sunday onward after the EC announced the dates of General Elections.
