Arrested Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Qamar-uz-Zaman was brought to Assam from Uttar Pradesh on a transit remand on Saturday.
Zaman was arrested by the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) on September 13 from Kanpur. He was allegedly recruited in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir. He had gone to Kashmir a few years ago to do some business but went missing in 2017. In 2018, a photo of him holding an AK-47 rifle had gone viral on the social media.
The police said Zaman was trying to spread the tentacles of the terrorist outfit to Assam and identified Hojai district to radicalize Muslim youth.
Within days after his arrest in UP, the Assam Police arrested eight people – seven of them from the state and one from Meghalaya – for their alleged links with him.
