INSIDENE EXCLUSIVE

Sensation prevailed in Jorhat after a life time convict with rigorous imprisonment made a daring broad daylight escape from the high security Jorhat Central Jail. The convict identified as Ratul Nath escaped from near the T.B ward of the jail campus by scaling a 18 Ft high wall. It was only after noon that Ratul was found missing during the routine head count. The incident was confirmed by Jailor Sanjiv Chetia.

Talking to INSIDENE, Jailor Sanjiv Chetia said," Ratul Nath was originally in Nagaon Jail. He was shifted on administrative grounds to Jorhat Jail owing to misconduct. We received him on September 20, 2017 and he had just passed 5 months of his sentence here in my custody. Yesterday Nath was found during the routine morning count when the jail inmates are allowed to move out from the cells to carry out allotted works. It seems he frequented the most prohibited area of the Jail that is the T.B ward and must have planned his escape by regularly monitoring the sentries duty and interchanging of guard duty. Unfortunately its quite impossible to scale the steep 18 Ft wall but this area had some faults and cracks in the wall and he may have scaled the wall and jumped over. Otherwise it is almost next to impossible to make a escape through the main entrance".

Asked if the convict was in payroll, Jailor Chetia informed INSIDENE that the convict wasn't on payroll and was in isolation from even family members while villagers of Borghat Jorabari area under Raha Police Station in Nagaon had publicly and socially boycotted Ratul’s family after the murder, conviction of which by the Nagaon Court of District and Sessions Judge on December 14, 2012 led to life imprisonment".

Interestingly Jailor Sanjiv Chetia ruled out Ratul's escape back to his native village in Nagaon. He reiterated about opposite forces in Ratul's village who would definitely tip off police at first sight. Rather he would move to places like Dimapur, the dream destination of criminals. Jailor Chetia said, "Every jail is a breeding ground for criminals and anti-social element and those having a taste for criminality are easily spotted and picked up by other masterminds. Though we try for reformation but it doesn't always bear fruit. Convict Ratul was also undergoing a ITI course".
