Justice Ajjikuttira Somaiah Bopanna has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court. The post had been vacant after the retirement of Chief Justice Ajit Singh. Justice AS Bopanna is a senior judge from Karnataka High Court and has functioning there since his elevation.
A collegium, consisting of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Kurian Joseph, while considering his name has also considered the names of justice HG Ramesh and Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh, who also hail from Karnataka High Court and are senior to justice Bopanna.
Having regard to all the relevant factors, the collegium unanimously found justice AS Bopanna suitable in all respects for being appointed as Chief justice of Gauhati High Court.
Justice Bopanna practised Civil, Constitutional, Company, Service and Labour matters in the High Court as well as in the Civil and Labour Courts. He worked as Legal Advisor to all Central Public Sector Undertakings and worked as Additional Central Government Standing
Counsel from 1999 to 2005.
