GUWAHATI: Outgoing Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal today submitted his resignation to governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi at Raj Bhavan here.
Sonowal was elected to the Assam legislative assembly from Majuli and was sworn in as the 14th Chief Minister of Assam in May 2016,.
On 28 January 2016, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) parliamentary board announced Sarbananda Sonowal as the party’s chief ministerial candidate of Assam
On 19 May 2016, Sarbananda Sonowal won the Assembly election from Majuli constituency making himself the next Chief Minister of Assam from BJP.

On 24 May 2016, he assumed office as the 14th chief minister of Assam
In the recently concluded state assembly elections, Sonowal won from Majuli assembly constituency defeating Congress candidate Rajib Lochan Pegu by 43,192 votes.
Sonowal, who retained his seat for the second time, polled 71,436 votes, while Pegu got 28,244 votes.
