Remove Designated Smoking Areas in view of Covid-19, urges CLPF Assam

The Consumer’s Legal Protection Forum (CLPF), Assam, has urged the removal of provision of smoking areas in hotels and restaurants from the state.

GUWAHATI: The Consumer’s Legal Protection Forum (CLPF), Assam, has urged the removal of provision of smoking areas in hotels and restaurants from the state. It said Designated Smoking Areas (DSAs) defeat the purpose of smoke –free policies and add to Covid-19 severity.

CLPF said that people with comprised respiratory and cardiovascular systems are at higher risk for COVID-19. DSAs facilitate the spread of COVID -19 infections as smokers cannot socially distance or wear masks and are trapped in proximity in a smoke-filled environment.

“Smokers who develop Covid infection have more complications and greater risk of fatality as virus seems to have more adverse effects for patients with non-communicable diseases. Smoke from tobacco products contains harmful chemicals which can lead to coronary heart disease, stroke and several cancers,” said Advocate Ajoy Hazarika, Secretary, Consumers’ Legal Protection Forum, Assam.

In a recent discussion held by National Law School of India University by restaurateurs, representatives from hotel & restaurant association, tourism and health departments of states, doctors and global experts it was concluded that 100 per cent smoke-free establishment was a win-win for customers as well as owners.

“All places should be completely smoke free in the best interest of the public health, especially in the current times,” said Hazarika. CLPF has urged that the provision for designated smoking areas in Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce Production, Supply and Distribution) Act COTPA 2003.
