GUWAHATI: 3-time former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's funeral pyre was set on flames by his son Gaurav Gogoi, who is a member of Parliament. The last rites of the former CM have been performed at the Navagraha Auditorium in Guwahati's Silpukhri area.

The last rites of the former Chief Minister of Assam Late Tarun Gogoi have been performed with full state honours at Navagraha crematorium at around 3:30 pm today. The leader had passed away on Monday.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other political leaders and followers attended the funeral. There was a strong attendance of Assam Congress leaders who paid their last respects to the departed leader Gogoi.

Gogoi’s final journey saw people from all faiths offering prayers for the deceased former Chief Minister, who was a key architect of the economic progress that Assam witnessed during the turn of the millennium after years of strife and turmoil.

The mortal remains of Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi were earlier today taken to his official residence at the Ministers’ colony in Dispur. From the ministers’ colony, he was taken to the Rukminigaon Church on the G.S Road.

After completion of a prayer service at the Rukminigaon church in the city, the procession headed towards the B. Borooah Road and Zoo Road areas.

Gogoi’s body was then taken to the Zoo Road Namghar and then the funeral procession continued along the Chandmari and GNB road. It then proceeded for prayers at the Burra Masjid in Ambari.

The next stop was Shukleshwar Temple and then the procession has headed towards the Ugratara Temple in the Uzanbazar area.

Lastly, Gogoi’s mortal remains were taken to the Navagraha Crematorium where they were interred.

The Assam government has declared a half-holiday on Thursday as a mark of respect for the three-time Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

According to a government order, the state government, semi-government offices, public sector undertakings, corporations, boards and educational institutions will remain closed from 1 pm on Thursday. Gogoi will be cremated with full state honours on November 26.

Assam Police played the "Lead Kindly Light" tune at the funeral. Religious prayers have been performed at the funeral.
