Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday that only two people got citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the state whereas five people were killed in the anti-CAA stir.
Citizenship is a sensitive issue in Assam that has for decades singed in the fire of anti-outsider movement.
Five people were killed in 2019 when Assam saw a massive anti-CAA agitation.
Addressing the media in Bongaigoan, CM Sarma said that the report on the One Nation One Election has been approved by the Union Cabinet of the Central Government. He stated that the people of the country will benefit from this initiative as it will prevent the wastage of money.
Speaking on the lines of the upcoming Bongaigaon assembly by-election, CM Sarma asserted that the AGP will be the party's candidate and the BJP-led coalition has decided to support it.

Sarma criticised the Congress, stating that despite the Assam Accord being signed in 1985, the Congress government, which came to power several times, did nothing to implement it.
He questioned why the Congress leadership, including former chief ministers and ministers, failed to take action. He specifically mentioned Bhupen Borah and Debabrata Saikia and expressed his surprise at their current stance.
He criticised the Congress for claiming that 20 lakh foreigners would gain citizenship in Assam through the CAA and questioned what the martyrs would say to the Congress from heaven about being misled.
