Umshek village, located along the Assam-Meghalaya border in West Khasi Hills district, came alive on Thursday with the 8th edition of the Songkristan Competition, organized by the Gijang Area A-Chik Cultural Arts and Sports Association. The event celebrated Garo cultural heritage with fervor and drew participants and spectators from both Meghalaya and Assam.
The competition commenced with a traditional Garo Wangala dance, performed by local youths, symbolizing the community's rich heritage. Remington G. Momin, FKJAGP regional president Trellingstar Shira, and GSU Kamrup District members.
MLA Momin highlighted the significance of Songkristan, describing it as a cultural and spiritual event fostering peace and unity within the Garo community. "Songkristan is an annual tradition celebrating the New Year and uniting our people," Momin stated, emphasizing its role in promoting cultural harmony.
This year's competition witnessed the participation of ten cultural groups from various villages, including Maspara, Malapara, Khasi Salbari, Malsapara, Athiabari, Ranikhat, Dogaon-Malang, Umshek, Madankillor, and Rongdhali. After an intense contest, Ranikhat secured the first position, while Maspara and Dogaon claimed the second and third spots, respectively. Winners received cash prizes of ₹30,000, ₹20,000, and ₹10,000.
MLA Momin also spoke about the cultural importance of Wangala and Songkristan, urging support from both Assam and Meghalaya governments to preserve and promote these traditions. "Wangala is the historical culture of the Garo people, and Songkristan represents the religious spirit of Christian Garos," he said, calling for peaceful coexistence among communities in the region.
