Akhil Gogoi is a betrayer, says father of anti-CAA movement violence victim

The bereaved father of a victim of the violence of the anti-CAA movement has termed Raijor Dal leader and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi as a betrayer.

On this day in 2019, when tensions broke out across the state and especially in Guwahati as the anti-CAA protests intensified, Abdul Alim was among the five persons who were shot dead in police firing.

Recalling the death of his son, Alim's father Lalmamud Ali called Akhil Gogoi a traitor, while saying that he was the one who provoked people to protest, but since then has not visited the bereaved families even once.

Ali also lamented that the Assam government and the Chief Minister have not given any recognition to the five youths who died during the anti-CAA protests.

"Today on December 12, my son lost his life. Today is a sad day for us. When the day comes we lose our sleep. Lurin Jyoti Gogoi visited us thrice when he opened his new party. Akhil Gogoi is a betrayer. One this day, five youths lost their lives during the anti-CAA protests in Guwahati, but he has not visited their houses. He has reaped benefits for himself by becoming the MLA. The Assam government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has not given any recognition to the five youths who died and none of the families have been called upon. On the other hand, Akhil Gogoi is a betrayer. Because of his provocations, five youths lost their lives," said the victim's father.

Five persons were killed in Assam during the tensions that broke out during the anti-CAA protests in 2019. Largescale protests were witnessed in Guwahati which saw heavy retaliation by the police and authorities, with curfew being clamped in Guwahati for several days.

Apart from Abdul Alim, the other persons who died are Azizul Hoque, Deepanjal Das, Sam Stafford and Ishwar Nayak.
