On a four-day visit aimed at assessing the severe impact of erosion and flooding in Lower Assam, Akhil Gogoi, president of the Raijor Dal, toured the villages in Dhubri district on Monday. During his visit, Gogoi highlighted the critical issue of riverbank erosion caused by the Brahmaputra River, affecting regions such as Kamrup, Barpeta, Goalpara, and Dhubri.
Gogoi delivered a sharp critique of Assam's chief minister and water resource minister, accusing them of neglecting the problems plaguing Lower Assam and failing to implement necessary safety measures. He emphasized that focusing on Hindu-Muslim politics is not a solution to the pressing issues faced by the people of Assam, particularly the recurrent and devastating floods.

Expressing his disappointment, Gogoi noted that the chief minister's absence from the flood-affected areas of Lower Assam is especially troubling during a time of urgent need. He argued that the chief minister's focus on taking selfies does little to address the real issues. Gogoi stressed that the affected areas are home to diverse communities, including indigenous and Bengali people, who have suffered significant losses due to erosion.
Gogoi further condemned the Assam government's longstanding neglect of Lower Assam, arguing that the entire state has been consistently overlooked. He called for immediate government action to develop a comprehensive project addressing flood and erosion issues. Gogoi urged the state government to request at least 50 crores from the Central Government as part of a relief package and to declare the erosion and floods a national disaster.
