With heavy monsoon rains hitting Arunachal Capital since morning, DC IAS Shweta Nagarkoti Mehta has announced a decisive eviction drive targeting illegal encroachments over drains and rivers. This action aims to mitigate water-logging and ensure public safety during the monsoon season.
Addressing the media, Mehta stated, "Public should not be scared because we are all prepared. Since three days, it may have seen that heavy downpour will bring destruction, but every monsoon season it happens. District administration is holding meetings from time to time and we have done some deployment. Our staff is very prepared. Work is going on in every water-logged area. And there have been no major incidents since two or three days. Even on Sunday, I personally visited the water-logged areas and ensured that everyone is safe."
Mehta highlighted the importance of community cooperation, urging residents to take precautionary measures to prevent blockages. "I would like to urge the public to be careful from their side as well. Because garbage, earth cutting, and construction materials lying outside often bring problems in the monsoon season. And it causes blockages in drains, which leads to water-logging," she emphasized.
In a recent order, the district administration mandated the clearance of all shops and structures built over drains. "We are also planning an eviction drive but I would like to urge the people to do a self-service on this," Mehta said, encouraging voluntary compliance to avoid forced removals.
The eviction drive is part of a broader strategy to ensure the city remains safe and functional during the heavy rains, with district officials actively monitoring and addressing problem areas.
