Assam: 14-year-old boy injured while trying to save livestock entangled in exposed electric wire

A 14-year-old boy, Mahidul Ali, was severely injured after being electrocuted in Nalbari district, leading to violent protests against the electricity department.

The incident occurred on Tuesday (May 28) afternoon when livestock got entangled in an electric cable carrying 11,000 volts, lying exposed behind the SSB camp at Suradi, amid frequent power outages caused by storms and rains.

In an attempt to rescue the animal, Mahidul Ali, a class VIII student from Dipta Suradi, came into contact with the live wire and suffered severe injuries.

An SSB jawan who tried to save Mahidul also sustained injuries.

The situation quickly escalated as an agitated crowd attacked the control room of the Barma power sub-divisional office in Barjhar, blaming gross negligence by the electricity department for the accident. Protesters vandalized the office, breaking doors, windows, and furniture.

Local police were dispatched to the scene to restore order and control the situation.

Authorities are investigating the incident, while residents continue to express their anger and frustration over the repeated negligence leading to such dangerous situations.
