Assam: 25 families evicted from forest land, 75 hectares of land cleared of encroachment in Chirang district

The forest department of Laukriguri in a joint operation with Assam Police carried out an eviction drive in Runikhata range along Indo-Bhutan border under Chirang district on September 24.

Total 25 families were evicted from the land for illegal encroachment on forest land. According to reports, 75 hectares of land was cleared of encroachment.

A section of people had illegally occupied land in Chirang forest and constructed houses and some people started cultivating rubber. 

The people of Udalguri and Laukriguri village had illegally occupied the forest lands and started cultivating,  due to which the forest department suddenly evicted the area.

Two persons each were detained by the forest department during the eviction drive. The detainees were identified as Ratan Narzary of Udalguri village and Majen Basumatary of Laukriguri village respectively.
