Assam: 576th birth anniversary of Srimanta Sankardev celebrated at Barpeta Satra

The 576th birth anniversary of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, the revered saint-scholar, cultural icon, and founder of the Assamese Vaishnavite movement, was celebrated with deep reverence and traditional rituals at Barpeta Satra.

Established by his devoted disciple Sri Sri Madhavdev, the Satra is a significant center of Assamese culture and spirituality.

The Abirvab Mahotsav of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev was marked by a series of religious activities, resonating with the chants of 'Krishna Naam' and 'Harinaam Kirtan', as devotees from across the state gathered to pay their respects. The celebrations, which mirror similar events happening throughout Assam, are rooted in centuries-old customs, creating a profound spiritual atmosphere at the Satra.

Dr. Babul Chandra Das, the 'Burha Sattriya' of Barpeta Satra, along with 'Deka Sattriya' Gautam Pathak, led the religious ceremonies in the 'Kirtanghar', where a large assembly of devotees participated.

The day began with the singing of 'Borgget' and devotional songs, known as 'Bhatima', setting the tone for a day dedicated to the remembrance of Srimanta Sankardev's contributions to Assam's cultural and spiritual landscape.

The main highlight of the day’s event was the recitation of 'Ghokha', a traditional form of chanting prayers in the Satra, which filled the air with spiritual energy. As the chants of Harinaam Kirtan continued to echo through the halls, the Satra was immersed in an atmosphere of devotion and reverence, a reflection of the powerful influence Srimanta Sankardev’s teachings have on the people of Assam.

A grand procession of the 'Bhagavat', a revered Vaishnavite scripture, was also taken out from the Barpeta Satra. Devotees carried the holy book through the streets, accompanied by the sound of 'Nam Kirtan', further heightening the religious fervor. The procession symbolised the spiritual journey of Sankardev’s teachings, which continue to guide countless followers today.

The Satra has been bustling with activity since the early hours of the morning, with large numbers of devotees, including women and mothers, gathering to participate in the rituals and pay homage. The spiritual resonance of the event was amplified by the collective singing of 'Harinaam Kirtan', a form of congregational chanting that holds immense significance in the Assamese Vaishnavite tradition.

The Abirvab Mahotsav at Barpeta Satra not only commemorates the birth of Srimanta Sankardev but also serves as a reminder of the saint’s timeless message of devotion, compassion, and unity through the worship of Lord Krishna. His teachings, which emphasised a simplified and inclusive form of worship, continue to shape the religious and cultural fabric of Assam.

The celebrations at Barpeta Satra, one of the most important Vaishnavite institutions in the state, are a testament to the enduring legacy of Srimanta Sankardev, whose influence transcends generations and continues to inspire devotion and spiritual awakening.
