Assam: ABVP clashes with police as they try to burn NIT Silchar Dean's effigy

In the wake of a student's death at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar, tensions ran high as members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest on Club Road, burning an effigy of Academic Dean BK Roy on September 17.

According to reliable sources, ABVP members voiced their grievances against Academic Dean BK Roy and the NIT Silchar authorities. Slogans rang out, condemning the perceived injustices.

Efforts to ignite the effigy were met with police intervention, further inflaming the situation. A confrontation ensued between police and ABVP members.

Ultimately, police managed to retrieve the effigy from the protesters.

On September 16 , DGP GP Singh took to social media to address the turmoil at NIT Silchar. He stated the understanding of peaceful protest while firmly denouncing acts of violence and vandalism. Singh urged the administration to uphold both empathy and firmness when handling such situations, emphasizing that issues are best resolved through dialogue. In a heartfelt plea, he called on parents to counsel their children appropriately.

The backdrop to these events is the suicide of an electrical engineering student at NIT Silchar. The student was discovered in unsettling circumstances, having taken his own life within the NIT hostel campus. Investigations have revealed that the student faced academic challenges, with multiple subject backlogs from his first semester. Consequently, the NIT authorities withheld his registration for the third year until these backlogs were cleared. In an effort to seek assistance, the student approached NIT Academic Dean BK Roy, but his concerns allegedly fell on deaf ears.
