Assam: Administration launches eviction drive in Sonapur's Kachutali to reclaim encroached land

In a major crackdown against illegal encroachment, the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration has initiated a fresh round of evictions at Kachutali in Sonapur on September 9. This re-eviction drive, led by senior officials was launched early in the morning and carried out with a strong security presence, including police and paramilitary forces.

The operation resulted in the demolition of structures illegally erected on government land. The administration’s action comes in the wake of increasing concerns about unauthorized settlements in the area, particularly after a group of suspected encroachers reportedly used the river route along the Kallang river to occupy the lands at Kachutali Barbila. These individuals had been residing there for an extended period.

"Our houses are being demolished. Have no idea where we will go from here. Request the administration to please heed to our prayers. We haven't encroached upon the land, we brought the land by payiong a sum of money. The land was registered as told by the broker. When we were told to by the broker that the land is on sale and hence should buy the land as it is a good piece of catch. Now after buying the land, our houses are being demolished after so many years. Already 10 years have passed since us residing in this locality", said one of the evicted person while speaking to the media.

This is not the first eviction action in the region. Just two weeks ago, authorities demolished several illegal houses in the nearby area of Dimaria, signaling a continued and intensified effort to clear encroached government land. The district administration's firm stance underscores its commitment to maintaining law and order, especially in areas prone to illegal settlements.
