Founder member and working president of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) Hafiz Rashid Choudhury today joined the Congress in Guwahati.
Choudhury formally joined the Congress party in the presence of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah and Congress party's Assam incharge Jitendra Singh, among other party leaders.
Choudhury's jump to the Congress is being seen as a setback to the AIUDF as he has been one of the founding members of the AIUDF, along with Badruddin Ajmal.
Welcoming Choudhury into the Congress, Bhupen Borah said that he is the very man in whose house the AIUDF was born as a political party.
Right after joining the Congress, Choudhury targeted Badruddin Ajmal while accusing him of engaging in communal politics.
Choudhury is a senior advocate of the Gauhati High Court and was also the founding president of the United Minorities Front (UMF). He has also been the chairman of the bar council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.
Noteworthy is that 35 advocates of the Gauhati High Court also joined the Congress party along with Hafiz Rashid Choudhury.
