Assam: AIUDF MLA calls Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma anti-Muslim over madrassa comment

All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam has said that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's comments on shutting down madrassas in the state shows his anti-Muslim mindset.

During a recent election campaign in Chhattisgarh, the Assam CM had stated that the shutting down of madrasas in the state has been his biggest achievement.

Referring to CM Sarma's recent speech during his election campaigning in Chhattisgarh, Islam said that Sarma's statement shows his communal mindset and anti-Muslim stance. The Dhing MLA further said that since he has not done anything good for the state, he is making such comments in other states.

"There he has said that his biggest achievement in life is the closure of madrassas. He has shown his anti-Muslim stand and his intolerance towards Muslims. What else will he say? Had he done any good work for the people of Assam as the Chief Minister he would have said that in Chhattisgarh. Had he done anything good for the people of Assam in various fields, had he worked to make Assam among the best states in the country, he would have said those things in other states. But since he has done nothing, hence he is saying in other states that his greatest achievement is shutting down madrassas."

Noteworthy here is that the Election Commission of India (EC) has issued a show cause notice to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his ‘Akbar’ remark in a poll campaign. The commission has asked Sarma to respond to the notice by 5 p.m. on October 30.

The move comes after Congress on Wednesday lodged complaints against Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma with the Election Commission, alleging that their remarks during the Chhattisgarh assembly poll campaign violated the model code of conduct.

Earlier, the Congress' complaint against Assam Chief Minister Sarma pertained to a speech he delivered in Chhattisgarh's Kawardha on 18 October while campaigning against Congress candidate Mohammad Akbar.

During this rally, the Assam CM had also talked of his government shutting down madrassas in the state, and had called it as his 'biggest achievement' in life.
