Assam: Alleged corruption threatens bridge worth crores to collapse in Karimganj

In Karimganj's Patharkandi constituency, the construction of a bridge over the Longai River has devolved into a scandalous misuse of public funds, raising significant concerns about corruption and quality control.

The bridge, which was constructed at a budget of approximately Rs 1.8 crore, was intended to benefit the residents of the Jherjhareri area. However, the project is marred by severe structural issues even before completion.

Several pillars of the bridge are sinking into the riverbanks, and cracks have appeared in various sections, indicating a substantial compromise in construction quality.

Speaking to the media, one of the locals said, "This bridge is being constructed at an approximate cost of Rs 1.80 crore. No change even after raising concern. And according to reports, we heard one Giri is the contractor of this project. Rest, the main issue with the bridge is that the second pillar at the end of this bridge is on the verge of collapse. But no sign of action on this".

Locals have repeatedly informed the contractor about the subpar work, but their concerns have been dismissed. Furthermore, it appears that the responsible government department has neglected to address these issues, exacerbating the problem.

The absence of a project plaque adds to the suspicion, suggesting a lack of transparency.
