The Assam Government's recent decision to include Howly, Barpeta Road, and Sorbhog in the Bajali District has sparked backlash. Residents of these areas have expressed their strong unwillingness to merge with Bajali District.
Anjali Das, the Chairman of the Howly Municipality Board and a BJP worker, openly voiced her dissatisfaction with the government's decision. She stated, "It is impossible for us to be a part of Bajali. People of Howly are showing unwillingness to become a part of Bajali,".
Nayan Das, a prominent leader of AASU (All Assam Students' Union) in Howly expressed his displeasure at the prospect of becoming a part of Bajali District. "We have maintained a healthy relationship with Barpeta for many years. Moreover, we share cultural and business-related ties with Barpeta. If we were included in Bajali District, we would undoubtedly face numerous difficulties," stated the AASU leader.
Adding his voice to the chorus of dissent, Dharanidhar Das, an advocate based in Howly said "People of Barpeta District are now confused by this decision. We have been an integral part of Barpeta since its inception, and we have no desire to be separated from it," he said. Moreover, he hinted that the people of Howly might consider boycotting the 2024 elections if their demands are not met.
Meanwhile, the Sorbhog Press Club has also raised its voice in opposition to the government's pronouncement. In a memorandum, the organization expressed its dissatisfaction and made it clear that the residents of Sorbhog wish to remain part of Barpeta.
