Assam: Bamunigaon residents rally against proposed stone quarry in Milmilia Reserved Forest

A proposed stone quarry in the Milmilia Reserved Forest's Ekcheliya Hill has sparked significant public outcry among residents of Bamunigaon. The hill, known for its scenic beauty and ecological richness, is now at the center of a heated debate over environmental conservation versus commercial exploitation.

The seven-hectare Ekcheliya Hill, a part of the Milmilia Reserved Forest, is a haven for diverse wildlife, including birds, reptiles, and other species. Despite its ecological significance, plans are underway to use heavy machinery like excavators and bulldozers, along with dynamite, to extract stone resources, raising concerns among locals.

On Wednesday, a protest meeting was convened by the Bamunigaon Yuva Sangha at their playground. Residents, activists, and local leaders strongly opposed the project, condemning it as an environmental threat and a violation of the area's cultural heritage.

Tankeshwar Rabha, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, addressed the gathering, stating, “We will not allow the destruction of tribal forest areas.” He further emphasized that legal action would be pursued if necessary to stop the project, warning against any unplanned activities in the area.

The protest saw widespread participation from local communities, who collectively resolved to safeguard the hill's ecological integrity and vowed to prevent its destruction at all costs.
