Assam: BJP eyes six minority-dominated constituencies for 2026 Assembly polls

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has revealed the BJP’s focused strategy for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, asserting that the party is actively working to strengthen its presence in constituencies with significant minority populations.

Speaking to the media, CM Sarma identified Rupohi, Samaguri, Laharighat, East Goalpara, South Karimganj, and North Karimganj as key constituencies where BJP has started preparations for a serious electoral contest.

Highlighting BJP’s growing influence in minority-dominated regions, Sarma noted the party’s unexpected success in securing votes in these areas during the last Lok Sabha elections. “We received 30,000–40,000 votes in every minority-dominated constituency, even in places where minorities make up 100% of the population. This shift is attributed to the benefits minorities have received through initiatives like the Orunodoi scheme, which has positively impacted numerous households,” said Sarma.

The Chief Minister also announced plans to provide ₹10,000 to women’s self-help groups, targeting 30 lakh women, including 7 lakh from minority communities, further bolstering BJP’s outreach.

Sarma emphasized the BJP’s stance against appeasement politics, stating, “We have never engaged in appeasement, but we focus on inclusive development. Evictions in VGR (Village Grazing Reserve) and PGR (Professional Grazing Reserve) areas have taken place irrespective of community, ensuring equality in governance.”

The Chief Minister expressed confidence in BJP’s ability to win more seats if the party intensifies its campaign in targeted constituencies. "We will establish BJP as the number one party in 4–5 additional minority seats in the near future," he said.

The BJP’s proactive measures and focus on welfare initiatives reflect its ambition to expand its influence across Assam, particularly in constituencies traditionally dominated by opposition parties. The upcoming elections are expected to witness a fierce battle for these strategic seats.
