The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) has demanded that the subjects of science and mathematics for Class 6 in schools in mother tongues i.e. Bodo and Assamese.
The ABSU president Dwipen Boro said that during the Gunotsav, the medium for science and mathematics for Class 6 should have been in the mother languages and not in English. Boro said that this step should have been taken up as per the directives of the National Education Policy of the Centre.
"The medium of instruction used during for Class 6 in Gunotsav should have been done in mother languages as per the National Education Policy, instead of English. We are opposing this move and we are demanding that it should be done in mother languages. We are calling upon the government that students should be given the opportunity to learn the subjects in their mother tongues," said Boro.
The ABSU president further said that Assam education minister Ranoj Pegu has assured them that bilingual mediums would be introduced in the upcoming academic session.
"The education minister has assured us that in April when the new academic session starts, bilingual mediums will start in Bodo-English, Assamese-English, Bengali-English; he has assured us that all will done in bilingual medium. We are hoping that the demand for mother tongues will not be opposed. The ABSU is working for all round comprehensive education in mother tongues,"
