Assam: Bridge washed away in Baksa as flood situation worsens

Incessant rain and severe flooding continue to impact parts of Assam, with a bridge in Tamulpur sub-division of Baksa district being washed away on June 23. The flood situation in the region remains grim, causing major disruptions to transportation and affecting the daily lives of local residents.

The bridge, located over the Daranga River, collapsed due to the rising water levels caused by incessant rains. The strong current of the river, flowing from Bhutan, breached the bridge on the Jalah-Kumarikata road, leading to the isolation of the Kumarikata-Jalah Road. As a result, traffic on the road has come to a halt, posing significant challenges for daily commuters, school students, and college students who heavily rely on this route.

Expressing their concerns, locals emphasized the impact of the bridge collapse on the community. Many people used the bridge for their daily commute, and its absence now creates difficulties for students trying to reach their schools. The community is urging the authorities to expedite the construction of a new bridge to restore smooth traffic flow and ensure convenient access to schools and other essential services.

The flood situation in Tamulpur sub-division is not limited to the bridge collapse. Dimila Chowk, another area in the sub-division, has also experienced flooding, leading to the Tamulpur-Dhamdhama-Mushalpur road being submerged. Furthermore, the Iron Bridge over the Latibari-Doamakha Bolia river has suffered damage, resulting in the complete breakdown of traffic on that route.

In a separate incident, the Baralia River caused havoc near Rangia, sweeping away a bridge known as the Bahar bridge. Fortunately, prompt action and rescue efforts saved several lives.
