In a move to ensure a disturbance-free Durga Puja celebration in Silchar, the Cachar district police, under the leadership of Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta, have reinforced their efforts by establishing a special force known as the "Anti-Romeo Squad." This initiative aims to create a safe environment for women, children, and young girls during the festive period.
With Durga Puja attracting large crowds to the streets of Silchar, concerns about the safety of women and children have grown in recent years. Reports of harassment and inappropriate behavior by groups of young men, particularly those riding motorcycles, have been on the rise during the festivities. In response, the police have taken proactive steps to curb such behavior and maintain peace.
"Silchar, being one of the key cities in Assam, celebrates Durga Puja with immense enthusiasm, drawing thousands of devotees to the streets. However, with the massive public gathering, some women and children face challenges, including harassment. To counter this, we have set up the ‘Anti-Romeo Squad,’ which includes specially trained personnel, including female officers, to monitor the situation 24/7 during the Puja," stated SP Mahatta in a media briefing.

The "Anti-Romeo Squad" consists of police officers who have undergone specialized training in the last 15 days to handle potential disturbances. The force includes women officers on motorcycles, who will be patrolling various areas throughout the day and night to ensure swift action against any form of harassment or eve-teasing.
SP Mahatta also issued a stern warning to potential troublemakers, stating, "Rowdy Romeos should be cautious this Puja season. The squad will be vigilant across every corner of the city to prevent any incidents of harassment."
Formed last year, the "Anti-Romeo Squad" has played a pivotal role in maintaining peace during the Durga Puja festivities in Silchar. This year, it is expected to continue its critical function, ensuring that the celebrations proceed smoothly and that women and children can participate in the festivities without fear or discomfort.
