Assam: Charaideo family’s conservation efforts help hornbills thrive in Chala reserve forest

A retired teacher and his family in Mathurapur Chakaliya village, Charaideo district, Assam have become guardians of nature, playing a pivotal role in conserving hornbills and preserving biodiversity in the Chala Community Reserve.

For years, Umakanta Konwar and his family have been safeguarding Oriental Pied Hornbills, providing them with a secure breeding ground near their home. These migratory birds venture beyond the Chala forest each year in search of suitable nesting sites, often facing threats from poachers. However, the Konwar family has ensured their safety by maintaining a protected environment.

A jackfruit tree behind their home has become a preferred nesting site for these birds, significantly boosting their population in the region. Between April and July, the hornbills nest in the family's backyard, only to return to the forest once their young are ready. To facilitate the breeding process, Konwar’s family ensures minimal human disturbance and provides ample food by hanging fresh fruits on trees and fences, preventing any food scarcity for the birds.

Recognizing their remarkable conservation efforts, the Chala Community Reserve Conservation Committee has honored and commended the family, acknowledging their role in enriching the reserve’s biodiversity. Their dedication has also played a key role in bringing the Chala Community Reserve under government conservation programs.

Inspired by their efforts, the Conservation Committee has urged other villagers to step forward and contribute to preserving the ecological balance of the forest, ensuring a thriving habitat for the region’s wildlife.
