Assam CM assures protection to Muslim community amid AAMSU concerns

A crucial meeting of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies was held at the Dhaligaon BRG Refinery in Chirang, focusing on the upcoming bypolls for the Sidli and Bongaigaon assembly constituencies. 

The gathering was attended by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister Ashok Singhal, Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Chief Pramod Boro, as well as key leaders from the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).

In line with the coalition agreements established in 2021, the bypolls are set to proceed, emphasizing the cooperative approach between the alliance partners. 

During the meeting, Chief Minister Sarma expressed his support for the strategic collaboration between the UPPL and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) in the upcoming 2025 BTC council elections. This move signifies a consolidated effort to strengthen the political fabric of the region.

Addressing a related issue, Chief Minister Sarma responded to concerns raised by the All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU) regarding the safety and protection of Muslims in the state. Sarma assured that the situation in the region remains secure. "It is safe here. There is safety," he affirmed, pointing out the absence of incidents such as dacoity and robbery. He also highlighted that the ongoing issue of eviction in Sonapur pertains to the tribal belt region and should not be conflated with broader safety concerns. 

The Chief Minister further noted the changing dynamics in Assam, stating that two decades ago, AAMSU members faced significant restrictions. He emphasized that the current environment allows for greater freedom of expression, as seen in recent protests and open criticism of the Chief Minister on public platforms. "If there was no safety, then anyone speaking against me would have definitely been arrested," Sarma remarked, underscoring the state's commitment to upholding free speech and civil liberties.
