An accident involving a 33-ton coal-laden truck in Nagopara, Boko, has brought to light an intricate network of unauthorized coal transport in the region. The incident, which occurred on National Highway 17, has raised serious concerns about unchecked practices of coal being moved from Meghalaya to multiple destinations without proper documentation.
The truck, registered under the number AS01 AC 9191, was found to be heavily overloaded. Following the crash, the driver admitted during interrogation that the transportation was part of an illegal operation involving middlemen who facilitate the coal's journey without regulatory oversight.
This admission has amplified calls for scrutiny into how such activities continue under the radar.
Compounding the issue is the fact that the Boko-Hahim road has a maximum weight limit of 15 tons. The presence of this 33-ton vehicle has sparked questions about the extent of complicity and enforcement lapses that allow such large-scale, unauthorized coal movement.
As of now, the identities of those managing and enabling this covert transport remain unexposed.
