Assam: Communal tensions erupt in Tamulpur, ABMSU president's residence attacked amid Durga Puja celebrations

Tensions flared in Tamulpur on Ocober 22 as the residence of Taison Hussain, the central president of the All BTC Minority Students' Union (ABMSU), was targeted in an attack that invoked communal sentiments.

The unrest began during the night during the Durga Puja celebraions in Dwarakusi market. As the cultural evening was in full swing, a group of young men reportedly vandalized the temple's lamps, igniting anger among the onlookers and members of the committee present to celebrate the festival.

The situation rapidly escalated as a group of angry individuals took to the streets, staging protests on the India-Bhutan road overnight in response to the incident. As the protests continued, miscreants resorted to pelting stones at the residence of ABMSU central committee president Taison Hussain, whose residence is near the puja pandal. The ABMSU office also fell victim to brick and stone attacks by unidentified assailants.

Responding to the situation, police arrived at the scene overnight. Police paramilitary forces were deployed to maintain order and protect the area as tensions ran high.

In the morning, the Tamulpur commissioner and the superintendent of police held discussions with the people gathered at the spot, attempting to defuse the situation and promote communal harmony.
