Assam: Congress leader urges Rights Commission to issue notice to government over 'fake encounters'

Assam Congress leader Debabrata Saikia while condemning the recent encounters that have taken place in the state said that state human rights commission should send a suo moto notice to the government demanding answers on the recent encounters.

Saikia's comments came in the wake of a series of encounters in Assam, which have raised concerns about the legality and human rights implications of such actions. He pointed to a recent incident where five individuals were shot by the Assam Police under suspicion of being ULFA-I members.

He also referenced a Supreme Court case that is currently addressing the issue of extra-judicial killings, highlighting the national attention on the matter.

Saikia urged the chairman of the state human rights commission to issue a suo moto notice to the Assam Government regarding these "fake encounters", which he described as acts against human rights. His call to action reflects a broader concern for the protection of civil liberties amidst security measures in the region.

In his media statement, Saikia emphasized that while the term "encounter" is used to describe such police operations, the Human Rights Commission has labeled them as extra-judicial killings. The State and National Human Rights Commissions have been notified about the issue, indicating the gravity of the situation and the need for oversight.

As Assam navigates the complex challenge of insurgency, Saikia's remarks underscore the ongoing debate over law enforcement methods and the balance between maintaining order and respecting the rule of law. His advocacy for a balanced and lawful approach to policing reflects the growing discourse on human rights and the legitimacy of police actions in the state.
