Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, also the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, arrived in Assam's Silchar today as part of his itinerary to visit flood-affected areas in the Northeast. His first stop was at the Thalai In Youth Care Center in Fulertal, where he visited a relief camp set up for those displaced.
Gandhi's visit to Assam comes amidst widespread devastation caused by heavy rains, resulting in flooding, landslides, and overflowing rivers across 28 districts. Approximately 22.70 lakh people have been affected by the calamity, prompting urgent relief efforts.
A spokesperson from the Assam state Congress highlighted Gandhi's agenda, stating that his visit aims to directly engage with affected individuals and assess the gravity of the situation. The visit holds significance as it marks Gandhi's first official trip to the Northeast since assuming the role of Leader of the Opposition.
During his stay, Gandhi is scheduled to meet with local officials and interact with flood victims to understand their immediate needs and challenges.
