Congress President Bhupen Bora finds himself embroiled in a controversy sorrounding the mising community. The incident, which took place during an event of the party in Jonai, involved Bora disrespecting the revered cloth of the mising tribe, Ribi Gaseng, by treading upon it.
The incident occurred at the residence of Upen Kuli, a former village elder in Na Pam Kuli village, situated in the Simen Mukh panchayat of Jonai constituency. As Bora carelessly stepped on the mising's self-respect symbol, strong reactions erupted within the mising community.
Ribi Gaseng, a hand-woven traditional product, holds a significant place in the hearts of the Mising people, representing their self-respect and cultural heritage. Many prominent individuals, including the Chief Minister of Assam and even the Prime Minister of India, proudly wear the symbol as a mark of honor.
In response to the incident, BJP MLA Bhuvan Pegu and the Mising Sahitya Sabha have called for a formal apology from Bhupen Bora to the Mising community. The demand for an apology stems from their deep concern about the insult meted out to the Mising tribe.
Tilak Doley, President of the Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK - All Mising Students' Union), voiced his displeasure in a Facebook post. He stated, "I won't delve into describing the profound respect the Mising people hold, their deep connection to their rich culture, their unwavering commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the Mising race, and their affection for the Chang Ghar. I earnestly urge Mising leaders, along with Bhupen Bora, who have affronted the Mising community, to provide a response. The consequences, however, may be grave."
