Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah announced today a significant move concerning the state's land laws. Following extensive discussions with leading lawyers and intellectuals, Borah said that the opposition plans to present a new land policy in the Assembly as a Private Member's Bill.
Borah's comments come in the wake of a ruling from the Gauhati High Court, which has stayed the eviction drive in Sonapur until September 30, 2024. He said that this decision reflects a broader trend, noting, "In many of the decisions made by Assam's Chief Ministers, the High Court has not been supportive."
The proposed land policy aims to be inclusive, drawing insights from knowledgeable individuals across Assam. Borah stated, "This will not be just a Congress land policy; it will be for the entire people of Assam." He expressed confidence that if the current government supports this initiative, a democratic decision could be reached.
Should the government oppose the bill, Borah assured that the Congress party would demonstrate its vision for land policy in the upcoming elections, promising to provide a "fitting reply" to the BJP and relief to the people of Assam.
