In the picturesque hills of Assam's Dima Hasao district, the political atmosphere is charged with anticipation as the counting of votes for the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council elections is currently underway.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already secured a victory in the Haflong seat, signalling a positive trend for the party in this crucial local governance body.
The election, which is the 13th iteration for the council, saw polling officials dispatched to their respective stations in preparation for the vote, which took place on January 8.
The counting of votes began at 8 AM today and currently, BJP has secured at least 10 seats including Halflong.
Chief Executive Member, Debolal Gorlosa asserted that BJP is set to win at least 22 seats in the current election.
The election to the 13th North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council was held on Monday, with polling officials having reached their respective stations well in advance.

The council consists of 22 constituencies under Dima Hasao, and six candidates from as many constituencies have won uncontested.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had actively campaigned in the region, promising to enhance health facilities, and connectivity, and transform the hill district into a tourist destination.
He also highlighted the government's efforts in restoring connectivity post-landslide in 2022 and during the COVID-19 pandemic, along with pledges of financial assistance for higher education and support for women under the Orunodoi scheme.
The Assam State Election Commission had categorized 100 of the 280 polling stations as 'sensitive' and 27 as 'very sensitive,' indicating the meticulous planning and security measures undertaken to ensure a fair and peaceful election process.
As the counting progresses, the eyes of the state are fixed on Dima Hasao, where the results will shape the future governance and development trajectory of this autonomous region nestled in the heart of Assam.
