As the Waqf Amendment Bill is set to be introduced in the Lok Sabha today, April 2, Assam Assembly Deputy Speaker Numal Momin voiced strong support for the Bill, calling it a "great initiative" by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the welfare of underprivileged Muslims in the country.
Speaking to reporters, Momin criticised the Congress party, accusing it of exploiting the poor Muslim community for political gain.
"The ideology of Congress has always been to exploit the poor Muslim community. They don’t want poor Muslims to get better facilities, better livelihood. At the same time, rich Congress people want to exploit these poor Muslim people," he said.
Furthermore, he urged the Congress party to support the bill and rectify its past mistakes. "My advice to the Congress party is that they should come forward with an open mind...and they should support this bill so that they can prove that they are with the poor Muslim people," Momin added.
The Bill is expected to spark debates in Parliament, with opposition parties likely to voice their stance on the proposed amendments.
