A new incident has shaken the Dhubri police force as a police officer was caught brandishing a gun and engaging in hooliganism in a commercial area of the town on the night of September 9.
Businessmen and locals in the NS Road, Dhubri Municipal area were left in shock as Dipjyoti Arjya, a Sub-Inspector (SI), who was dressed in civilian clothing, allegedly displayed a firearm and threatened employees of a business hub.
The incident unfolded when locals immediately informed the Dhubri Sadar Police Station about the situation. A team of police officers from the station rushed to the scene to bring the situation under control, as tensions were further exacerbated by the alarmed locals. Subsequently, SI Arjya was apprehended and taken to the Police Station.
According to the complaint filed, a young man had entered the Oswal Clinical Laboratory, an incident captured on CCTV footage. The individual had identified himself as a policeman and threatened laboratory workers, demanding their mobile phones and displaying a firearm when questioned.
''We were busy checking our medicine stocks and then he came and placed in gun on the table and asked my staff to hand over their phones to him. When my staff asked him why he needed their phones, he didn't give any reply. We don't know why he came here with a gun,'' said a staff of the Oswal Clinical Laboratory.
The SI was detained by the Dhubri police squad and placed in police custody for further inquiry. What raised eyebrows was the subsequent release of the SI from the Police Station, leaving many to speculate about potential attempts to cover up this dishonorable act and protect the reputation of the prestigious police force.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another controversy, where a constable was captured on CCTV stealing onions from a truck in Dhubri town.
The local community has expressed skepticism about the Dhubri Sadar police's handling of these incidents, fearing that such actions could tarnish the reputation and prestige of the force.
