Assam: Dibrugarh District Administration initiates relief work amid rising Brahmaputra river level and soil erosion

The Dibrugarh District Administration has moved into action to address the challenges posed by the rapid increase of the water level of the Brahmaputra River and soil erosion in the region. District Commissioner Bikram Kairi shared insights into the ongoing relief efforts, highlighting the proactive measures taken to mitigate the impact on affected communities.

"The soil erosion in Mohana Ghat has been occurring at various points since last year. This year, starting from April, the erosion has gradually intensified in that area," stated Commissioner Kairi. 

He further said, "In response to the erosion, immediate measures were implemented. A total of 13 houses along the riverbank have been adversely affected. To ensure their safety, we have successfully relocated them to safer locations."

Assam has faced recurring challenges from the Brahmaputra's erosive force for a very long time. The river's powerful currents and shifting channels often result in rapid erosion of riverbanks, threatening homes, farmland, and infrastructure along its course. Dibrugarh district, situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra, is one of the areas vulnerable to such erosion which not only affects agricultural productivity but also poses risks to human settlements, displacing communities and causing loss of property.
