Assam: Except for Paresh Baruah, all founding members of ULFA were here today, says Himanta Biswa Sarma

The United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) on December 29 signed a tripartite Memorandum of Settlement with the Central government and the Assam state government, bringing optimism for lasting peace in the region. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, highlighting the significant presence of ULFA's founding members during the signing ceremony.

CM Sarma stated, "Except for one individual who is now leading the anti-talk faction of ULFA, Paresh Baruah, all the founding members of ULFA were here today. These people came to Delhi in 1993 also when PM PV Narasimha Rao was there. Initial discussions took place, but it could not be taken to a logical conclusion. So after 1993, today, they have visited North Block again and they have signed the accord."

The Chief Minister provided insight into the assurances given by ULFA leaders stating their commitment to disband the organization. "They have assured us that ULFA will be disbanded. They are now living in camps, so they will disband the camps, they will deposit their arms, and 726 cadres will be in the mainstream."

The agreement marks a significant step towards resolving longstanding issues in the region, with both the Central and state governments actively engaging in dialogue with ULFA.

The Chief Minister expressed hope for a brighter future, stating, "This is a historic moment for Assam. We believe that this accord will usher in a new era of peace and prosperity for the state. The commitment shown by ULFA in disbanding and integrating into the mainstream is a positive sign for the region."
